Simple Overview
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) is a national campaign launched in 2015 to address the declining Child Sex Ratio and ensure girls receive education and equal opportunities. Its key financial component for families is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) — a government-backed savings account for a girl child that offers a high interest rate and tax benefits.
Who Can Apply?
- Parents or guardians of a girl child below 10 years (for Sukanya Samriddhi account)
- All families in districts with low Child Sex Ratio
- Girl students for scholarships under state-level BBBP components
Income Limits
No income limit for Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. Available to all families.
Required Documents
- Birth certificate of the girl child
- Aadhaar of the girl child (or birth registration number)
- Identity and address proof of parent/guardian
- Initial deposit amount (minimum ₹250)
Step-by-Step Application Process
- 1Visit Post Office or authorised bank
Go to your nearest Post Office or any authorised bank (SBI, Bank of Baroda, HDFC, ICICI, etc.) with documents.
- 2Fill SSY account opening form
Complete the Sukanya Samriddhi account opening form. Mention the girl's name, date of birth, and guardian details accurately.
- 3Make the initial deposit
Deposit a minimum of ₹250 to open the account. The maximum is ₹1.5 lakh per year.
- 4Deposit every year for 15 years
Make at least the minimum deposit every year for 15 years from account opening. Interest continues until maturity at age 21.
- 5Withdraw for education at age 18
50% of the balance can be withdrawn for higher education expenses after the girl turns 18 years old.
Benefits of the Scheme
- High interest rate on savings — currently ~8.2% per year (revised quarterly)
- Tax exemption under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per year
- Entire maturity amount is tax-free
- 50% withdrawal allowed at age 18 for higher education
- Account can be transferred anywhere in India
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Delaying opening the account — the sooner it is opened, the more interest compounds over 21 years
- Not depositing the minimum ₹250 in a year — puts account under penalty rules
- Opening more than 2 SSY accounts — only 1 per girl child, maximum 2 per family (except twins)
