This account is the gateway to receiving benefits from all government schemes through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Over 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened to date.
Who Can Apply?
- Any Indian citizen without a bank account
- People above 10 years can open an account in their own name
- Even those with another bank account can open a Jan Dhan account for the added benefits

No income limit. Available to all citizens.
Required Documents
- Aadhaar Card (primary KYC — sufficient for digital account opening)
- Alternatively: Voter ID, Driving Licence, PAN, NREGA Job Card, or any govt-issued photo ID
- One passport-size photograph
- No document? Open a 'small account' with just a self-certified photograph
Step-by-Step Application Process
- 1Visit any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra)
Go to your nearest bank branch or rural Bank Mitra/banking agent. Ask for the Jan Dhan Yojana account opening form.
- 2Fill the account opening form
Provide your name, address, Aadhaar number, and nominee details. Takes about 15–20 minutes.
- 3Get passbook and RuPay card
You receive a passbook and a RuPay debit card immediately (sometimes issued within a few days).
- 4Link to Aadhaar and mobile number
Ensure your Aadhaar is seeded to this account — essential for receiving DBT benefits from all government schemes.
Benefits of the Scheme
- Free zero-balance savings account — no minimum balance ever
- Gateway for all government scheme cash benefits (PM Kisan, LPG subsidy, scholarships, MGNREGA wages)
- Free RuPay debit card with ₹2 lakh accident insurance
- Overdraft facility up to ₹10,000 after 6 months of satisfactory account use
- Access to insurance, remittance, and pension products
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not using the RuPay card at least once every 90 days — card may become inactive, losing accident insurance
