Simple Overview
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is crop insurance for Indian farmers. If your crops are damaged by floods, drought, heavy rain, pest attacks, or other natural events, this scheme pays you compensation. Farmers pay a very small premium and the government pays the rest. It covers food crops, oilseeds, and commercial crops.
Who Can Apply?
- All farmers — including sharecroppers and tenant farmers — growing notified crops in notified areas
- Farmers with crop loans from banks (auto-enrolled)
- Non-loanee farmers who opt in voluntarily
Income Limits
No income limit. The scheme is open to all farmers growing eligible crops in enrolled districts.
Required Documents
- Aadhaar Card
- Land record (Khasra/Khatoni) showing crop being grown
- Sowing certificate from Patwari or local authority
- Bank account passbook
- Photograph of sown crop (some states)
Step-by-Step Application Process
- 1Enrol before the season deadline
Kharif deadline is generally 31 July; Rabi is 31 December. Missing the deadline means you miss that season entirely.
- 2Visit your bank or CSC centre
If you have a crop loan, your bank may auto-enrol you. Non-loanee farmers must visit their bank, CSC, or insurance company representative.
- 3Fill the application and pay premium
Provide crop details, cultivation area, and land details. Pay your small share of the premium (2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi).
- 4Receive your policy certificate
Keep this certificate safely. You will need it when making a claim.
- 5Report damage within 72 hours
If your crop is damaged, report it within 72 hours via the PMFBY app, the portal, or by calling the insurance company helpline.
- 6Receive compensation in your account
After inspection, compensation is calculated and credited directly to your bank account.
Benefits of the Scheme
- Financial protection against crop losses from floods, drought, cyclone, pest attack, and more
- Very low premium for farmers — government subsidises the majority of the cost
- Compensation sent directly to bank account
- Covers pre-sowing losses, post-harvest losses, and localised calamities
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Missing the enrolment deadline for the season
- Not reporting damage within 72 hours of the event
- Enrolling for one crop but growing a different crop — claim will be rejected
- Not keeping the policy certificate
